  • Measure the steps from top to bottom stair nosing
  • Add preferred overhang length and cut the rail
  • Fasten brackets 1 foot from the ends with self-tapping screws, and attach end caps using a rubber mallet
  • Use a flat surface with cardboard to prevent scuffs and scratches
  • Measure for preferred height (typically 35” to 38”)
  • You can mark either bracket height or rail height
  • Locate a stud to confirm proper backing is in place
  • Fasten the rail loosely and mark bracket holes
  • Drill holes smaller than the wall plugs (They should fit tight)
  • Make sure the wall plugs sit below flush to prevent gaps between wall and bracket
  • Fasten the rail tightly to the wall
  • Go over the entire railing system and check if you missed any loose screws, notice if there are any scratches.
  • Step back to admire a job well done.

Pipe Rail - Quick Code Checklist

Pipe Rail Height

  • Measure for preferred height (typically 35” to 38”)
  • Keep it consistent the whole run (no dips or jumps)
  • Must be continuous for the full stair run (No breaks where your hand has to let go)

Wall Clearance

  • Minimum 1.5″ clearance from wall
  • This is critical so a hand can fully wrap the rail
  • Less than that = automatic fail in most inspections

Grip Size / Shape

  • Round rails:: 1.25″ to 2″ diameter
  • If not round: Must be “graspable” (no big flat surfaces)

Strength

  • Must support ~200 lbs of force
  • This means if someone falls and grabs it, it holds
