Financial Aid For Front Step and Deck Railings

If you’re a person with a disability or a senior in Ontario with mobility challenges, you may be eligible for funding to help make your home safer. The Ontario Home and Vehicle Modification Program (HVMP), run by March of Dimes Canada, helps cover the cost of accessibility modifications for homes. This program helps people with disabilities remove physical barriers, so they can stay in their homes safely.

What Does the Program Cover?

The HVMP provides up to $15,000 in lifetime funding for home modifications that address mobility and safety needs. It focuses on making homes more accessible by removing risks, like falls or difficulty moving around. For seniors or people with disabilities who need assistance with mobility, adding grab rails or exterior aluminum railings can be a major benefit.

Key Modifications Include:

  • Exterior railings for steps, ramps, or decks to help seniors safely move in and out of their homes.
  • Grab rails, which are helpful for steadying yourself on steps or near entrances.

These modifications can make it easier for you to move around your property, access essential services, and maintain independence.

The program aims to:

  • Reduce safety risks at home
  • Help seniors or people with disabilities stay out of hospitals or long-term care facilities
  • Support caregivers in their work
  • Prevent people from losing jobs due to mobility challenges

To qualify, you must:

  • Live in Ontario
  • Have a physical disability or mobility challenge
  • Require modifications to make your home safer or more accessible
  • Have a letter from an Occupational Therapist (OT) to explain your needs

The funding can be used for practical, essential changes that make your home safer. For many people, this includes installing railings and grab bars outside the home.

How to Apply:

You’ll need to fill out an application and provide supporting documents like proof of your disability and recommendations from an OT.

The HVMP only covers projects that are directly related to accessibility, not ones like cosmetic improvements, repairs, or upgrades that aren’t needed for safety. It also won’t cover projects on new homes.

Some items not covered by the program:

  • The purchase of new homes or construction on newly built homes
  • Extra rooms or a second accessible exit
  • Walk-in tubs

Why Aluminum Railings?

At Ottawa Deck and Rail, we specialize in affordable aluminum railings. Here’s why aluminum is a great choice:

  • Durable: Aluminum doesn’t rust and can handle Ontario’s tough weather.
  • Low-maintenance: Aluminum railings require little upkeep.
  • Affordable: Our aluminum railings are strong, safe, and affordable.

How Railings Can Help

Falls are a major concern for people with mobility concerns. Adding railings to your deck or front steps can help prevent accidents. Here’s how:

  • Support for stairs: Railings give you something to hold onto when using stairs.
  • Safety for entryways: Getting in and out of your home is easier and safer with a solid railing.
  • Peace of mind: Railings give both you and your family comfort, knowing your home is safer.

If you live in Ontario and have mobility concerns, the Ontario Home and Vehicle Modification Program may help with costs to upgrade your home safety. Aluminum railings and grab rails are affordable and effective ways to improve safety, especially for your deck or front steps. At Ottawa Deck and Rail, we provide durable, long-lasting and affordable options to meet your needs.
